KABUL: Save the Children has warned that the recent earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan have affected over 260,000 children, leaving some of them homeless. These children require immediate rescue efforts and sustained international support. The organization stated that at least 280 children have been orphaned due to the earthquakes, and ongoing aftershocks are exacerbating their fear and anxiety. Reports indicate that more than 5,000 homes have been destroyed, forcing many families to spend nights in tents or under the open sky. Some families are even using bags of rice as makeshift bedding. Samira Sayed Rahman, a representative of Save the Children in Afghanistan, stated: “Children are facing severe psychological trauma due to the destruction of their homes and the loss of loved ones, and the continuous tremors keep their fears alive.” She emphasized that urgent assistance is vital to save the lives and futures of these children, urging the international community to act swiftly. Official figures indicate that between Sunday and Monday night, six significant earthquakes particularly devastated Kunar province, resulting in at least 2,205 deaths and approximately 3,640 injuries. This earthquake is considered one of the deadliest in recent years, causing widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure while severely impacting children, who now face increased needs for emergency humanitarian aid, food, shelter, and psychological support. International organizations have warned that without timely assistance, the humanitarian situation in the earthquake-affected areas will become even more critical.
