CAIRO: Egypt’s Ministry of Health has reported that three people were killed and 103 others injured when a train derailed en route to Cairo, the capital. Local officials stated that the train was traveling from Marsa Matruh in northern Egypt when seven of its carriages went off the tracks, with two carriages overturning. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Minister of Health, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, personally visiting the hospital where the victims were treated. All injured passengers were transported to two local hospitals via ambulance. Officials from the Ministry of Transport and the National Railways Authority of Egypt are currently investigating the cause of the accident. Reports indicate that the incident occurred along the railway line between the Fuka and Jalal stations in the Marsa Matruh area. Egypt’s railway network has a history of similar accidents, with experts citing poor maintenance and a lack of investment in the sector as significant contributing factors. One of the deadliest train disasters in the country occurred in 2002, claiming the lives of over 370 people.
