KABUL: Today marks the 37th anniversary of Pashto language communication in space, a historic event that took place 37 years ago when Abdul Ahad Momand traveled to space on behalf of Afghanistan for nine days. During this journey, he made phone calls in Pashto to his mother. On August 31, 1988, Momand carried the Holy Quran and the Afghan national flag with him. Before his ascent, UNAMA noted that he became the fourth language to be spoken in space when he communicated with his mother in Pashto. Momand’s journey to space lasted nine days, and upon returning to Earth, he was awarded the title of “National Hero” by then-President Dr. Najibullah. It is worth mentioning that Pashto is one of Afghanistan’s two official languages and is spoken by people in many regions of the country.
