UN calls for urgent assistance for Afghan refugees

KABUL: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that 2.3 million Afghan refugees have been expelled from Iran and Pakistan this year and are in urgent need of assistance. The organization emphasized that the world cannot turn a blind eye to the situation in Afghanistan under the current circumstances. Many of these individuals have returned to harsh conditions in their home country, which is not prepared to accept them. UN experts previously warned that refugees are returning to a country where the authorities are accused of human rights violations. This comes as the Pakistani government has set a deadline of September 1 for over one million Afghan refugees whose temporary residency cards have expired to leave the country. Aid organizations have consistently warned that returnees will face numerous challenges, including issues related to shelter, employment, poverty, and educational and personal restrictions.
