CHARIKAR: The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that 12 individuals, including two women, were publicly whipped in Parwan province. According to a statement from the court, the individuals were sentenced by the Taliban’s urban court in Parwan to prison terms ranging from one to four years and 30 to 39 lashes for “illicit relationships” and for the use and sale of drugs. The sentences were carried out on Monday during a public gathering, following approval from the Taliban’s Supreme Court. The Supreme Court regularly reports on the implementation of whipping punishments across provinces, while human rights organizations deem this method of punishment contrary to human dignity and have called for its cessation. International bodies also consider corporal punishment and public executions to be in violation of international laws.
