ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani media outlet has reported that a conference for the political opponents of the Taliban, scheduled to take place in Islamabad, has been postponed due to pressure from the group. According to Dawn, the event was planned by the SASSI Think Tank for August 25 and 26, aiming to discuss Afghanistan’s future regarding peace, stability, and development. Reports indicate that Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi requested Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, during a trilateral meeting in Kabul to prevent the participation of Taliban’s opposition political figures in the conference. It was noted that no Taliban members were invited to the conference, and Muttaqi expressed concerns about the presence of opposing factions. The conference was set to include former members of the Afghan parliament, such as Fawzia Koofi, former Minister of Economy Mustafa Mastoor, Habib-ur-Rahman Hikmatyar, and several other prominent figures. Former U.S. Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, criticized the presence of the Taliban’s opponents at the conference and accused Pakistan of supporting these opposing factions.
