KABUL: The Israeli military has announced that it has entered Gaza City as part of the first phase of its planned offensive, gaining control over areas surrounding the city following clashes with Hamas. An Israeli military spokesperson referred to Hamas as a “weakened and fatigued guerrilla group.” This statement came after the Israeli Defense Minister confirmed extensive operations aimed at fully capturing Gaza, which are expected to continue until next year. The new Israeli assault begins at a time when Hamas had recently accepted a new proposal for a ceasefire, but a senior Israeli official expressed skepticism about accepting a 60-day truce. The official stated that Israel demands the release of all hostages. The framework that Hamas agreed to included a temporary ceasefire, the release of hostages in phases, the freedom of some Palestinian prisoners, and permission for humanitarian aid to enter. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced the approval of the plan to fully capture Gaza, which was endorsed by the Israeli security cabinet last week. This comes as mediators await an official response from Tel Aviv regarding a ceasefire. According to the Haaretz newspaper, Gallant stated, “After the operations, Gaza will look different and will never be the same as before.” The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also declared that he has ordered a reduction in timelines for the capture of Hamas strongholds and the dismantling of the group. While specific details of the new timelines have not been provided, this decision coincides with preparations for the military operations aimed at seizing Gaza City. Israeli military spokesperson General Aviv Kochavi remarked that Hamas has been “defeated and shattered” after 22 months of conflict.
