KABUL: In modern Afghan history August 19 is recorded as the day of the country’s independence from Britain. In 1298 in the solar calendar (1919 in the Gregorian calendar), King Amanullah Khan officially declared Afghanistan’s independence following a national uprising and political negotiations. As of 1404 in the solar calendar, it has been 106 years since that historic day. This day symbolizes the Afghan people’s efforts for national sovereignty, freedom, and autonomy, and serves as a reminder of their resistance against colonialism and foreign interventions. Experts and historians note that Afghanistan’s independence heralded national unity and the quest for an independent government, with its significance still evident in shaping national identity and the country’s politics.
