Freedom of Expression in Afghanistan: Restrictions and threats after Taliban’s return

KABUL: The Afghanistan Journalists Support Organization has warned that freedom of expression has been severely restricted since the Taliban’s return to power, as the fourth anniversary of the fall of the republic approaches. Since August 15, 2021, hundreds of journalists have lost their jobs, and many media outlets have shut down. The Taliban has imposed strict regulations and censorship, significantly limiting media activities and sidelining journalists, especially women. During this period, 539 incidents of violence against journalists have been recorded, including arrests, threats, beatings, and even murders. Women journalists, facing threats and discrimination, have either abandoned their jobs or sought refuge in neighboring countries. However, they continue to face security risks and psychological pressures. The organization has urged international bodies to take immediate action to support Afghan journalists and to pressure the Taliban to create a free media environment. It has warned that otherwise, freedom of expression in Afghanistan will be completely destroyed.
