KABUL: The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to a report by UNAMA’s Human Rights section regarding the situation of Afghan refugees expelled from Iran and Pakistan. The ministry called the report “baseless” and warned that “appropriate action” would be taken. UNAMA reported earlier this month that returned refugees face torture, mistreatment, arbitrary detention, and security threats from the Taliban. The Taliban’s Foreign Ministry dismissed these claims as reflections of “limited individual experiences,” arguing that the “positive experiences of millions of Afghans” who returned in safe and stable conditions were overlooked. This is not the first instance of the Taliban clashing with UN investigative bodies; last year, the group rejected reports from the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan and prohibited his visit to the country.
