MOSCOW: Steve Witkoff, the special representative of the U.S. President, arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, and met with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, at the Kremlin, media reported today. The meeting comes just three days before the deadline set by Donald Trump for Moscow to accept a ceasefire. Trump had warned that if Russia did not end the war in Ukraine, it would face harsher sanctions. According to Washington’s warnings, if the Kremlin ignores efforts to reach a peace agreement, new sanctions will be imposed not only on Russia but also on countries that trade with it. The Kremlin has not yet released details of the conversation between Putin and Trump’s representative, but sources close to the U.S. delegation indicated that the main focus of the talks was on ending the conflict in Ukraine and discussing diplomatic pressures. Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow just hours before the official meeting with Putin. He has been appointed by the White House as Trump’s special representative for the Middle East and Europe and plays an active role in international peace efforts. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, previously promised to end the war in Ukraine during his second presidential term.
