August 6 marks 80th anniversary of first atomic bombing

WASHINGTON: Today, August 6, marks the 80th anniversary of the first atomic bombing. According to Reuters, the bomb was dropped for the first time in 1945 at 8:15 AM by a U.S. B-29 bomber, which carried 10,000 pounds of uranium, on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The bombing resulted in the immediate deaths of approximately 78,000 people, with the total death toll rising to about 140,000 by the end of that year. Following the bombing, the U.S. dropped another atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki on August 9, which killed over 70,000 people. Japan surrendered on August 15, marking the end of World War II.
