MOSCOW: A volcano in Russia’s remote Kamchatka region has become active following a recent earthquake, marking its first eruption in five centuries. The International Volcano Monitoring Program in Russia reported that this volcano last erupted in 1550. According to the Kamchatka Emergency Services, the eruption occurred at the Krasheninnikov volcano, sending ash clouds approximately 6,000 meters into the air, directed towards the Sea of Okhotsk. Russian scientists had warned that after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, the region might experience aftershocks for several weeks. On Sunday, the 8.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Kuril Islands, and it was the strongest recorded in the area since 2011. Before this powerful earthquake, a 9.1 magnitude quake struck Japan in 2011, resulting in over 15,000 fatalities.
