WASHINGTON: Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced in a press conference at the White House that his administration will assist Afghans who collaborated with American forces in obtaining permanent residency in the U.S. Trump stated, “We know the good people and will take care of those who worked for us.” He added that his government aims to help approximately 90% of Afghan applicants secure residency in the U.S. However, Trump’s administration has recently halted several programs supporting Afghan refugees. In May, the U.S. State Department suspended the “Afghan Coordinators Program,” which was responsible for facilitating the transition of eligible refugees. Democratic Representative Julie Johnson from Texas remarked that these actions contradict the government’s promises, leaving thousands of Afghans who trusted the U.S. in a state of uncertainty.
