Trump to impose 25% tariff on imports from India starting September 1 KABUL: President Donald Trump has announced that a 25% tariff will be imposed on imports from India starting September 1. He cited India’s unfair trade policies and its purchase of arms from Russia as the reasons for this decision. In a social media post, Trump stated that India imposes heavy tariffs on foreign goods and is one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, alongside China, at a time when the global community is calling for an end to the war in Ukraine. In response, a source close to the Indian government told Reuters that New Delhi will continue to engage in discussions with Washington to reach a trade agreement. A major obstacle in these talks is India’s concern over the potential influx of U.S. agricultural and dairy products, which could threaten the livelihoods of millions of Indian farmers. Last year, India exported approximately $87 billion worth of goods to the U.S., including apparel, pharmaceuticals, jewelry, and chemical products. The U.S. currently faces a trade deficit of $45 billion with India. Previously, Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged to finalize the first phase of a trade agreement by 2025. However, it remains unclear how these new tariffs will affect the negotiation process.
