Taliban arrest 24 youth over displaying national flag in Kandahar KANDAHAR: The officials of the Taliban from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Kandahar have arrested at least 24 young individuals over the past two days for sharing images of Afghanistan’s tricolor national flag on social media. Some of those arrested have been released after signing written commitments, while others remain in custody. One detainee, a resident of Kandahar, stated that he was held for about 24 hours before being released on bail after being contacted by the officials. Another Kandahar resident reported that his brother, a student at the Faculty of Economics at Kandahar University, was arrested along with two classmates for posting images of the national flag on Facebook and has yet to be released. The Taliban have declared it illegal to display, distribute, or raise the Afghan national flag, and a joint group from the intelligence, information, and culture departments, along with the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, is monitoring social media users. Those who post images of the national flag are subject to arrest. Asad 7 of the solar year was designated as Afghanistan’s National Flag Day by the previous government; however, the Taliban have prohibited the recognition of this day and the use of the tricolor flag.
