Monkeys: A new headache for tourists in Indonesia

JAKARTA: Tourists in Indonesia are reporting disturbances and thefts by monkeys, particularly at the Uluwatu Temple in Bali, a sacred site of Hinduism. Visitors have noted that the temple has become a haven for monkeys that cleverly snatch mobile phones and other valuables from tourists, only to return them in exchange for food. According to Fox News, these long-tailed monkeys steal between 5 to 10 phones daily. Wildlife researchers say this behavior is a learned tactic for obtaining food. The monkeys have developed a knack for identifying valuable items, often targeting those with higher worth. Some tourists have accused these animals of cunningly taking their sunglasses, wallets, and other valuables, only to return them for snacks. Currently, around 600 monkeys inhabit this historic temple, which dates back over 1,100 years.
