ICC launches new initiative to support Afghan women cricketers in exile

KABUL: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a new initiative to support Afghan women cricketers in exile, marking a significant step for those who have been barred from sports since the Taliban’s return to power. Following the Taliban takeover in 2021, women were prohibited from participating in sports, shattering the dreams of cricketers who had recently signed contracts with the Afghanistan Cricket Board. Many were forced to flee the country, with some currently seeking refuge in Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Earlier this year, a group of these exiled players participated in a symbolic match in Melbourne, Australia, against the “Cricket Without Borders” team. In a report released yesterday, the ICC quoted Nahida Zabuli, the captain of the team, saying, “For the first time, we feel seen. This is about reclaiming our identity, not just cricket.” Another player, Shabnam Hassan, remarked, “Since 2021 until now, this is the first time I am focusing on cricket again.” The ICC stated that this program is part of broader efforts to support Afghan women cricketers in exile.
