KABUL: Britain, France, and Germany have issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, unconditional release of hostages, and an end to hostilities. The three countries, which maintain close relations with Israel, emphasized that Hamas should not have a role in Gaza’s future and deemed its disarmament essential. The statement highlighted the necessity of meeting the basic needs of civilians and ensuring immediate access to water and food. They urged Israel to allow the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to operate to address the hunger crisis and called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law. The statement described the actions of settlers and threats of annexation as serious obstacles to a two-state solution. The three European countries also mentioned their collaboration on a plan for the “next phase in Gaza,” which would involve the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the removal of Hamas leadership. Meanwhile, over 100 humanitarian organizations have warned that the hunger crisis in Gaza is worsening. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that 59,676 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died in Israeli attacks so far. Additionally, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the UK may recognize Palestine following a ceasefire. He emphasized that this step should be part of the process to transition from a ceasefire to lasting peace. Recognizing Palestine has been one of the Labour Party’s pledges during the recent UK elections, and France also plans to recognize Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
