WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has stated that if the European Union opens its markets to American companies, the United States will reduce tariffs on European imports. Trump made the remarks at a meeting related to artificial intelligence. The U.S. has been in talks with the European Union for several weeks regarding a trade agreement to prevent the imposition of a 30% tariff set to take effect on August 1. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized a united stance during a meeting in Berlin, warning that if negotiations fail, the European Union will respond accordingly. German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius stated that both leaders agreed that if talks fail, reciprocal trade measures should remain open and new tools should be created if necessary. He added that Germany and France will coordinate the final stages of discussions with Italy and the European Commission.
