KABUL: The United Nations has expressed concern regarding the Taliban government’s arrests of several women in Kabul on charges of violating hijab regulations. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) stated, “We are concerned about the arrests of numerous women and girls from July 16 to 19.” UNAMA noted on its X account that these incidents further marginalize women and girls from society, foster an atmosphere of fear, and diminish public trust. The organization has also reached out to officials regarding this matter. Last week, an eyewitness told the AFP news agency that personnel from the Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in central Kabul were seen “forcibly putting two women into a vehicle.”
