KABUL: Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur, has expressed deep concern regarding reports that some Afghan nationals may soon be deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a post on his X account, Bennett stated, “I am seriously concerned about reports indicating preparations are underway to expel at-risk Afghans from the UAE.” He urged the UAE to immediately halt these plans, emphasizing that “Afghanistan is not safe, and those forced to return will face serious persecution and violence.”

This warning follows a joint statement in which Bennett and other UN special rapporteurs condemned the ongoing forced deportations of Afghan nationals by Iran and Pakistan.

The statement asserted, “UN experts condemn the ongoing forced repatriation of Afghan nationals from Iran and Pakistan,” stressing that such deportations should cease immediately.

UN experts have called on all governments to uphold their international obligations and provide full protection to Afghan refugees and asylum seekers until conditions for voluntary, safe, and dignified return to Afghanistan are established.
