- KABUL: The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has reported that nearly half of Afghan children live in severe food insecurity. In response to this situation, the United Nations agency is launching a new comprehensive initiative to combat child malnutrition, strengthen local food systems, enhance public awareness, and increase community involvement. According to UNICEF’s statement, the new initiative, titled “First Foods Afghanistan,” will run from 2025 to 2028 and is funded by the UK government. Its goal is to provide adequate nutrition for Afghan children facing a severe nutrition crisis. It is estimated that this year, over 3.5 million more Afghan children will confront severe malnutrition. Nearly half of children under five years old are struggling with stunted growth due to lack of food, and more than half of children aged six to 23 months consume only one or two types of food, while five food groups are necessary for healthy growth.
