KABUL: The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Roza Otunbayeva, stated that they continue to support Afghan returnees despite budget cuts.

She mentioned that UN officials have held several meetings with authorities from neighboring countries to prevent the forced return of refugees, hoping for positive outcomes.

Otunbayeva made the remarks during a meeting with Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Administrative Affairs, at the Arg, as reported by Bakhtar News Agency.

Following her visit to the Islam Qala border in Herat, UNAMA released a statement highlighting that returnees from Iran are facing psychological issues and hardship.

According to their data, since the beginning of 2025, approximately 1.3 million refugees have returned to Afghanistan, with many reportedly being forcibly removed.

The United Nations calls for an end to the irregular return of refugees from neighboring countries, emphasizing that this process should be dignified, safe, and voluntary.
