ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Islamabad has ordered a state investigation into the cases of individuals arrested on charges of blasphemy, following requests from hundreds of families.
Judge Ijaz Khan stated that a commission will be formed within a month, and it will complete its investigations within four months.
Defense attorneys have praised the court’s ruling, noting that families now feel their voices are being heard, especially as many of the arrested individuals are young.
Since 2022, there has been an increase in the arrests of young people in Pakistan accused of blasphemy, particularly for online activities, including on WhatsApp.
According to a report from October of last year, 767 individuals are imprisoned in Pakistan on blasphemy charges and are awaiting trial.
Blasphemy is considered a serious crime under Pakistani law, with offenders facing the death penalty.
