New Book: OpenAI operates like a New Empire

KABUL: Renowned technology journalist Karen Hao has written in her latest book that OpenAI, the company behind AI applications, behaves like a new empire.

She argues that the company not only uses people’s data without consent but also relies on cheap labor in countries like Kenya and Chile, as well as exploiting abundant electricity and water resources in poorer nations for its systems.

In her book, Hao explains how OpenAI transformed from a small entity into a major power within a few years, yet now lacks transparency and seems primarily focused on its own profits.

She also highlights the struggles of workers in countries like Kenya who were hired to clean violent content but subsequently faced psychological issues.

Hao warns that the excessive consumption of electricity and water by AI companies is harmful to the environment.

She cautions that if these practices continue, not only will jobs and nature suffer, but democracy and individual freedoms will also be at risk.
