KABUL: Susan Ferguson, the UN Special Representative for Women, has emphasized that the continuation of humanitarian services in Afghanistan is impossible without the presence and participation of women. She described Afghan women aid workers as “brave” and called for international support for them.

In a statement released by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Ferguson stressed that Afghan women working in humanitarian organizations play a vital role in delivering aid to those in need.

She stated, “They [Afghan women aid workers] continue to provide critical assistance. We must stand with the women of Afghanistan to preserve these lifesaving services.”

The remarks come amid increasing restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women’s activities within UN agencies and humanitarian organizations in Afghanistan.

According to a previous report from OCHA, at least 29 humanitarian workers, most of whom were women, have been detained and harassed by the Taliban in recent months.
