Taliban’s directive in Nangarhar violates women’s fundamental rights

KABUL: The Afghanistan Journalists Support Organization has deemed the recent directive from local Taliban officials in Nangarhar a blatant violation of women’s fundamental rights.

The Women Journalists’ Advocacy Committee of the organization released a statement on Tuesday, stating that under this directive, female journalists are prohibited from going to work without Mahram (a male guardian).

The step by the Taliban severely undermines women’s participation in media and the citizens’ right to free and balanced access to information.

The statement highlighted that despite numerous challenges and threats, female journalists have played a vital role in voicing the concerns of the public, particularly women and vulnerable groups.

So far, the Taliban officials have not responded to this directive.

Since the Taliban regained power on mid-August, 2021, severe restrictions have been imposed on women and girls in various aspects of life in Afghanistan.
