BERLIN: Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, stated in an interview with WDR that he no longer understands the Israeli military’s objectives in Gaza and warned that if the current situation continues, Germany will cease its support for Netanyahu’s government.

Merz emphasized that recent attacks in Gaza have caused significant harm to civilians, which can ‘no longer be justified’ as a fight against Hamas.

He expressed his intention to contact Benjamin Netanyahu to urge him not to “exceed limits,” although he remains cautious in his criticisms due to historical reasons.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has called for a halt to arms exports to Israel.

Adis Ahmadovic, the party’s foreign policy spokesperson, stated, “German weapons should not be used to exacerbate humanitarian disasters.”

Ralph Stegner, a senior SPD representative, also demanded an immediate cessation of violations of international law by Netanyahu’s government.
