WASHINGTON: The White House spokesperson, Caroline Levitt, stated that U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the potential nuclear agreement with Iran and the recent shooting incident involving two Israeli embassy employees in Washington.
Levitt mentioned that both leaders had a “constructive discussion” and emphasized that Trump believes negotiations with Iran are progressing in the right direction.
She noted: “The president believes there are two potential outcomes for an agreement with Iran: one being a very positive diplomatic solution and the other a significantly negative scenario for Iran.”
Recent reports from international media have suggested that the talks may fail, leading Israel to consider attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei expressed skepticism on April 30, stating that he does not believe negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear issues with the U.S. will yield results.
Iran and the U.S. have engaged in four rounds of talks, mediated by Oman, with the fifth round scheduled to take place today (Friday, May 23) in Rome, Italy.
According to Reuters, a knowledgeable source indicated that Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, would travel to Rome for these discussions, accompanied by senior State Department official Michael Anton.
The source added that these talks are expected to include both direct and indirect negotiations, similar to previous rounds.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials revealed that Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Mossad chief David Barnea will meet with Witkoff on the sidelines of the Iran nuclear discussions.
