While China emphasizes the peaceful nature of its scientific innovations, U.S. officials warn that the country is advancing much further in the artificial intelligence competition than public perception suggests.

Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated on Tuesday, May 20, that China’s scientific and industrial innovations, including the BeiDou satellite system, are not aimed at any country and are intended for global cooperation and serving humanity.

Meanwhile, Michael Quigley, a member of the U.S. Congressional China Commission, announced in a specialized session that China has made “greater than expected” progress in the global AI race and may possess even more hidden capabilities.

He called for the establishment of a project similar to the “Manhattan Project” to enhance America’s competitive edge against China, warning that U.S.

research facilities could be vulnerable to Chinese technical espionage.
