BERLIN: The government of German has announced temporary measures to strengthen border controls in order to address rampant immigration.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz informed Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, and Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, prior to this decision.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the aim of these measures is to increase border police presence to prevent the entry of undocumented migrants.
Currently, about 11,000 police officers are stationed at Germany’s borders, with plans to add an additional 2,000 to 3,000 officers.
These actions are part of the government’s strategy to reduce the influence of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD), which recently secured a significant increase in votes, coming in second in the latest elections.
